Full Description

A 28-year-old man from the Isle of Wight, Connor Richard Barnes, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for committing serious sexual offences against a 25-year-old woman in Gosport. The crimes, which included two counts of rape and coercive controlling behaviour, occurred over a period from January 2020 to March 2022 at an address in the town.

Barnes, who has no fixed address on the Isle of Wight, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on 18 January 2024, where a jury found him guilty following a trial. He was remanded in custody after the verdict and returned to court on 12 March 2024 for sentencing. In addition to the custodial sentence, Barnes was required to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the gravity of the offences.

The case was investigated by Hampshire Constabulary, with Detective Constable Leanne Boyd commenting on the outcome: “This is an excellent result and we are very pleased that we have been able to help the victim see the justice she deserves. We commend her not only for her bravery in coming forward, but also for continuing to support the investigation throughout.” The detective further emphasised the force's commitment to pursuing such cases, stating: “We hope that these results reflect the seriousness with which we take all reports of sexual assault and coercive controlling behaviour, and that we will put victims first and relentlessly pursue offenders.”

The offences involved repeated acts of rape and a pattern of coercive control, which caused significant harm to the victim. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to address domestic abuse and sexual violence in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The sentencing provides closure for the victim and serves as a deterrent to potential offenders.
