Offence Summary

Gordon Stanforth, a convicted sex offender, was jailed for seven years for sexually assaulting two boys in the 1970s while working as a football coach, involving grooming and abuse at various locations in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

Full Description

Gordon Stanforth, a 66-year-old man from Tullibody in Clackmannanshire, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting two young boys more than 40 years ago. As a football coach in the 1970s, Stanforth groomed and targeted the vulnerable boys, abusing one between 1971 and 1975 and the other between 1975 and 1977 at various locations in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

The case came to light after both victims, who had been 'paralysed with fear' during the assaults, came forward to speak to police decades later. Stanforth pleaded guilty to the charges of sexual assault. This conviction marks his third known involvement in sexual offences; he was previously fined £150 in November 1974 for lewd, indecent, and libidinous offences, and jailed for two years in December 2003 for similar lewd, indecent, and libidinous practices and behaviour.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Lord Boyd addressed Stanforth directly, stating: 'You have been convicted of sexually assaulting two young boys more than 40 years ago. The nature of the offences show that there was a large degree of planning and grooming involved. You targeted two vulnerable boys. These are serious offences.' The sentencing reflects the gravity of the grooming involved and the long-term impact on the victims, bringing justice after many years.

This case was reported by the BBC, highlighting the persistence of historical sexual abuse investigations in Scotland. The offences occurred in North Lanarkshire, and the prosecution was handled through Scottish Courts.
