Offence Summary

Christopher Grinter, a convicted paedophile from North Yorkshire, was found in possession of indecent images of children on his digital devices, leading to his return to Teesside Crown Court where he received a suspended sentence.

Full Description

Christopher Grinter, a 43-year-old man from Forcett in North Yorkshire, appeared at Teesside Crown Court after being arrested on December 16, 2023, for possessing indecent images of children. This incident marked a relapse into his previous pattern of offending, having been jailed for five years in 2009 for grooming teenage girls into performing sexual acts via webcams.

Prosecutor Annelise Haugstad informed the court that police had recovered ten category A images—the most severe classification—eight category B images, and 26 category C images from Grinter's digital devices during investigations by specialist officers. Importantly, none of these images were determined to have been created by Grinter himself. Grinter pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of indecent images of children.

The court heard details of Grinter's prior conviction, where he had acted like a 'film director' to persuade teenagers to pose for him using webcams connected between his home and the girls' bedrooms, amassing a collection of homemade indecent photos and videos. He was released from custody in 2011 after serving his sentence.

Mitigating, Ben Campbell explained that Grinter had remained out of trouble for over 14 years until a relapse following the death of his father. Judge Timothy Stead acknowledged the seriousness of the offence, noting its similarity to Grinter's previous, more grave misconduct, and that it occurred while he was subject to court orders. The judge stated: 'You have been in trouble on a previous occasion in a way that is highly relevant, it was not dissimilar offending but your previous offence was more serious. Not that this matter should be regarded as anything other than serious in its own right.'

Sentencing Grinter to 12 months in custody, suspended for two years, Judge Stead took into account the nearly three months Grinter had spent on remand, equivalent to a six-month prison term. He remarked: 'You have reverted to offending indecent images upon your digital apparatus, the numbers involved are not great in cases of a similar kind. This is exactly what you have done before and was committed while you were subject to court orders.' Additionally, Grinter was ordered to attend 26 sessions of an accredited programme to address his offending behaviour and 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was made subject to a new indefinite sexual harm prevention order and required to register on the sex offenders' register for seven years.

The case was reported by The Northern Echo, with coverage by crime and court reporter Graeme Hetherington, highlighting Grinter's history of child sexual exploitation offences in the North Yorkshire area.
