Offence Summary

Jac Nelson, a former student from Thornton, raped a woman in his student accommodation in Liverpool in April 2022. He was convicted following a six-day trial and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Full Description

Jac Nelson, a 26-year-old resident of Ullswater Avenue in Thornton on the Fylde coast, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a woman in his student digs while studying at Liverpool University. The attack occurred in April 2022 at his accommodation in Kensington, Liverpool, where Nelson carried out the sexual assault on a woman aged 16 or over.

The case came to light after Nelson was charged with rape of a woman 16 years of age or over, as well as assault of a female 13 and over by penetration with part of the body or a thing. Following a six-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court, Nelson was found guilty of the rape charge. No verdict was reached on the assault count, which remains on file. The court proceedings highlighted the traumatic nature of the offence, with Nelson having denied the allegations throughout, forcing the victim to relive the experience during the trial.

During sentencing, Judge [name not specified in article] imposed the eight-year custodial sentence, recognising the severity of the crime. In addition to the prison term, Nelson was made subject to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. The conviction underscores the ongoing efforts to combat violence against women and girls, as evidenced by the thorough investigation led by Merseyside Police.

Detective Constable Alex Fowler, who headed the investigation for Merseyside Police, commented on the case: 'Nelson has continually denied what he did, and has put his victim through the trauma of having to relive the experience by way of a trial. And while no sentence will repair the damage Nelson inflicted on his victim, I hope this conviction has secured some justice for her. I would like to praise the courage and dignity shown by the victim throughout the investigation.' Fowler further emphasised the police's commitment to protecting victims of sexual offences, noting that specially trained officers and advocates provide support throughout such cases.

The incident took place in April 2022, and Nelson's sentencing occurred on 29 July 2025, as reported by the Blackpool Gazette. This case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of sexual violence in educational settings and the importance of swift justice. Source: Blackpool Gazette, published 29th July 2025.
