Offence Summary

Sexual deviant Ian McAninley groomed and sexually abused a young girl with gifts while breaching his SHPO and sex offender registration, receiving a seven-year extended sentence.

Full Description

Ian McAninley, a 56-year-old from Gainsborough Road, Stanley, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court to an extended seven years in prison plus three years on licence for grooming and sexually abusing a young girl. McAninley bought the youngster gifts before abusing her during a weekend stayover, failing to disclose his previous conviction for downloading child abuse videos. He also breached his sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) and sex offender registration terms by lying repeatedly to authorities.

Jonathan Walker, prosecuting, described how the abuse left the girl withdrawn, stopping her from attending school or socialising. Her mother's victim impact statement highlighted the severe mental health impact. McAninley was found guilty of two charges of sexually abusing the girl and pleaded guilty to several SHPO and registration breaches.

Recorder Andrew Haslam KC branded McAninley a predator with a deeply entrenched sexual attraction to children, noting his lies during the trial. He imposed an indefinite renewed SHPO. The court emphasised the predatory nature of the grooming and abuse.
