Offence Summary

Robert Bilsborough, a previously convicted sex offender, was jailed for possessing hundreds of indecent images of children discovered on his electronic devices during a routine police check.

Full Description

A 35-year-old man from Penwortham, Lancashire, has been imprisoned following the discovery of numerous indecent images of children on his electronic devices. Robert Bilsborough, residing on Kingsfold Drive, was subject to ongoing monitoring due to a prior conviction for making and possessing such material. In November 2024, officers conducted a forensic examination as part of his conditions, uncovering a significant cache of illegal content.

The investigation revealed a total of 397 indecent images, categorised by severity under UK guidelines. This included 13 Category A images, representing the most serious offences; 23 Category B images; and 361 Category C images. These findings prompted further legal action against Bilsborough, who had breached his monitoring requirements by retaining prohibited material.

Bilsborough appeared in court and pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. On 28 February 2025, he was sentenced to 58 weeks in prison at a local court. In addition to the custodial term, the judge imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which will limit his access to the internet and electronic devices upon his release to prevent future offending.

A police spokesperson commented on the case, stating: "This case highlights the importance of monitoring convicted offenders. The discovery of these images reinforces the necessity of continued vigilance to protect vulnerable children. We will continue to take firm action against those who exploit children in this way." The statement underscores the police's commitment to safeguarding children from sexual exploitation. Bilsborough remains in custody as he serves his sentence, with authorities emphasising the role of public reporting in such investigations.
