Offence Summary

Melvyn Moreton, a 38-year-old kitchen porter, was jailed for five years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a schoolgirl from the age of eight to eleven. He denied the charges but was convicted following a two-day trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

Full Description

Melvyn Moreton, a 38-year-old kitchen porter originally from Penarth but residing in Barry, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a series of sexual offences against a young schoolgirl. The abuse, which involved nine charges of indecent assault and indecency against a child, took place over several years, starting when the victim was just eight years old and continuing until she was eleven.

Cardiff Crown Court heard harrowing details of how Moreton manipulated the girl into role-playing scenarios where she would pretend to have been kidnapped, allowing him to act out a fantasy of rescuing her before carrying out the assaults. The court was told that these acts represented a grave breach of trust and caused significant harm to the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Moreton denied all charges during the trial, which lasted two days and concluded with his conviction on Monday, December 18. Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty based on the evidence presented. Judge Christopher Vosper, presiding over the case, addressed Moreton directly during sentencing, stating: 'You have still not acknowledged any responsibility for your actions and you represent a continued danger to young girls. Your crimes were so serious that only immediate custody is justified.' In addition to the five-year custodial sentence, Moreton was disqualified from working with children, underscoring the court's recognition of the ongoing risk he poses.

The case was reported by the Penarth Times, highlighting the severity of child sexual exploitation in local communities. South Wales Police, responsible for the investigation in the Vale of Glamorgan area, pursued the prosecution, leading to Moreton's accountability. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the long-term impacts of such offences on victims and the importance of judicial intervention to protect vulnerable children.
