Offence Summary

John Kenny arranged online to carry out child abuse, believing he was communicating with children or their parents, but was actually speaking to undercover police officers who snared him leading to his arrest.

Full Description

John Kenny, a 30-year-old resident of Blackpool, Lancashire, was jailed after attempting to arrange the sexual abuse of children online. Unbeknownst to him, the individuals he was engaging with on various platforms were undercover law enforcement officers from Lancashire Constabulary. Kenny's actions involved depraved sexual conversations where he sought to facilitate child sex offences, attempting to cause children to view images of sexual activity and engaging in sexual communication with those he believed to be minors.

Kenny, of Watson Road in Blackpool, admitted to the charges of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, attempting to cause a child to watch or look at an image of sexual activity, and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. His arrest followed a sting operation by the police, highlighting the proactive measures taken to protect vulnerable children from online predators.

On 1 April 2023, Kenny appeared at Preston Crown Court, where he was sentenced to four years' imprisonment with an extended licence period of three years. This sentencing reflects the severity of his intentions to commit 'sickening' acts of child abuse, as described in the case.

Detective Constable Wayne Marshall, from Lancashire Constabulary's Mosovo team (Management of Sexual Offenders and Violent Offenders), commented on the case: 'Kenny went onto these platforms with the sole purpose of engaging in depraved sexual conversations with people he thought were either children or parents of children he wished to abuse in the most sickening ways and the sentence he has been given reflects the gravity of his offending.' Marshall further emphasised Kenny's dangerous nature, stating: 'Kenny is a dangerous man and I am satisfied that the jail sentence will help protect the public for some considerable time to come.'

Lancashire Constabulary continues its commitment to targeting individuals who seek to abuse children, working with regional partners to bring such offenders to justice. The case was reported by UKNIP on their website, underscoring the ongoing efforts to combat child sexual exploitation in the UK.
