Offence Summary

Taqi Mohammed was jailed for 12 months after admitting to downloading indecent images of children, including the most serious category A material, just weeks after receiving a prior opportunity from the courts.

Full Description

Taqi Mohammed, 26, from Stratford Street in Beeston, Leeds, was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Leeds Crown Court in January 2025 for three counts of downloading indecent images of children, ranging from category A—the most severe—to categories B and C.

The court was informed that Mohammed, already known to the justice system, had been given leniency in a previous case but began accessing 'sick abuse images' mere weeks after that opportunity. This rapid recidivism demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law and the welfare of child victims, with the images depicting horrific exploitation. Prosecutors detailed how Mohammed's device contained a collection of prohibited material, obtained through online means, which he admitted to possessing and distributing in limited instances.

During the hearing, the judge condemned Mohammed's actions as those of a 'paedophile' who preyed on the vulnerability of children through digital means. A statement from West Yorkshire Police highlighted the investigation's role in uncovering the downloads, which were traced back to his home address. 'This case is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of online child sexual exploitation,' a police spokesperson noted, emphasising the force's commitment to pursuing such offenders.

The 12-month custodial sentence reflects the gravity of the offences, particularly given Mohammed's quick return to criminal behaviour. Upon release, he will likely face stricter monitoring under sex offender registration, aimed at preventing further harm. This sentencing contributes to broader efforts in West Yorkshire to combat the proliferation of child abuse imagery.
