Michael Ogilvie, a 32-year-old convicted paedophile from Wakefield, has been imprisoned for the 17th time following repeated breaches of the sex offender register. The case, heard at Leeds Crown Court, highlights Ogilvie's ongoing disregard for legal restrictions imposed to protect the public, particularly children, from his history of sexual offences.

Ogilvie's criminal record includes 35 previous convictions for 52 offences, with 18 prior breaches of the sex offender register. The order he violated was originally imposed in 2020 after he admitted to causing or inciting a female child under 16 to engage in sexual activity, a serious child sex offence. Despite this, Ogilvie has been jailed 16 times previously for similar non-compliance, demonstrating a pattern of persistent offending.

Following his most recent release from prison, Ogilvie was initially residing at approved premises on Doncaster Road in Wakefield. However, he was ordered to leave after breaking the rules there. He then moved to a property in the village of Kirkthorpe, east of Wakefield, occupied by a woman who was aware of his criminal history. This address was not registered with the police, constituting a breach of the register's requirements. Complicating matters, the woman had a 16-year-old daughter who, while primarily living with her grandmother, had been present at the property on occasions during Ogilvie's stay.

Prosecutor Maleka Akuany informed the court that Ogilvie was arrested last month and made full admissions regarding the breaches. There was no evidence of inappropriate behaviour towards the teenage girl during his time at the property, as conceded by his defence barrister, Mollie Briggs. Briggs argued that Ogilvie's chaotic lifestyle, exacerbated by alcohol and cannabis use, contributed to his repeated violations, and emphasised that he recognised the need to hold himself more accountable.

Judge Penelope Belcher, presiding over the case, remarked that it was apparent Ogilvie 'could not care less about the order'. She imposed a 14-month custodial sentence, underscoring the court's frustration with his inability or unwillingness to comply. Ogilvie appeared via video link from HMP Hull.
