Offence Summary

Stephen Minton, aged 70, was jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to multiple child sex offences committed between 2004 and 2008 in Somerset.

Full Description

A 70-year-old man from Bishop's Hull, Taunton, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of child sex offences that took place over four years in the early 2000s. Stephen Minton appeared at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, where he pleaded guilty to four serious charges involving the sexual abuse of a vulnerable child.

The offences, committed between 2004 and 2008 in Somerset, included sexual activity with a child, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity by a person in a position of trust. The investigation into these crimes began in 2020 when the victim bravely came forward to report the abuse they had endured as a child. Following the report, Minton was arrested and subsequently charged.

In a poignant statement read out during the court proceedings, the victim described the profound and lasting impact of the abuse on their life. They stated: "I really struggle to build relationships because of being let down so much by those I trusted and those who were supposed to be looking after me." This testimony highlighted the deep emotional scars left by Minton's actions, which exploited his position of power over the vulnerable child over a significant period.

Investigating officer Kate Chapman, from Avon and Somerset Police, commended the victim's courage in reporting the non-recent abuse. She said: "Minton took advantage of a position of power to repeatedly abuse a vulnerable child over a significant period of time. The victim deserves immense credit for the bravery they have shown in coming forward and reporting the abuse they suffered." Chapman emphasised the seriousness with which such cases are treated, noting the lasting effects on the victim and the thoroughness of the police investigation.

Minton's sentencing on Friday, February 7, 2025, brings some measure of justice to the victim after years of silence. The case underscores the importance of supporting survivors of historical sexual abuse, as reported by the West Somerset Free Press.
