Offence Summary

Former police constable Gary McBride downloaded and distributed child pornography images while serving in Merseyside Police and during a difficult divorce. He was sentenced to nine months in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Full Description

Gary McBride, a 35-year-old former constable with Merseyside Police, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on 20 May 2005 for possessing and distributing indecent images of children. McBride, residing on William Morris Street in Bootle, Merseyside, admitted to six charges of making indecent images and six charges of distributing a total of 40 such images. The offences came to light during an ongoing police investigation into another individual suspected of indecently assaulting a teenage girl.

The court heard that McBride had been exchanging emails with the suspect, during which they shared child pornography images. This discovery prompted Merseyside Police to raid McBride's home on 3 November 2004, where officers seized two computers for forensic analysis. The examination revealed the illicit material, confirming McBride's involvement in downloading and distributing the images via the internet. At the time of the offences, McBride was navigating a challenging divorce, though this was noted as context rather than mitigation by the court.

Judge Maureen Roddy presided over the case and imposed a custodial sentence of nine months' imprisonment on McBride. Additionally, he was required to register as a sex offender for a period of 10 years, in line with UK legislation for such convictions. The sentencing reflects the seriousness of child sexual exploitation offences, particularly given McBride's position of trust as a serving police officer.

Merseyside Police, the prosecuting force, emphasised the breach of trust in their statements following the raid. No further details on the specific content of the images or additional accomplices were disclosed in court proceedings, but the case underscores the vigilance of law enforcement in tackling online child abuse networks.
