Offence Summary

Gordon Holliday was jailed for indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl approximately 20 years ago. He received a 42-month custodial sentence for the sexual abuse.

Full Description

Gordon Holliday, aged 60 from Howbank Road in Egremont, Cumbria, was one of three men sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court for sexually abusing a girl in unconnected incidents over 20 years ago. Holliday was convicted of one count of indecent assault against the victim when she was just 13 years old. The abuse came to light only recently when the victim reported the historical offences to police, having not realised for many years that what happened constituted abuse.

The victim detailed the profound impact of the crimes in a statement read in court by a detective: "My whole life has been tainted by their actions. I feel they have robbed me of the remaining years of my childhood, of my education and possible future." Her words underscored the lasting trauma caused by Holliday and the other perpetrators.

Recorder Richard Archer imposed a sentence of 42 months' imprisonment on Holliday. As part of the sentencing, Holliday is required to sign the sex offenders' register and is prohibited from working with children and vulnerable adults. The case was investigated by Cumbria Police, who provided key evidence leading to his conviction.

This sentencing forms part of a broader court proceeding involving multiple offenders against the same victim, emphasising the court's commitment to addressing historical sexual offences. Holliday's actions, as a teacher among the accused in related contexts, highlight the betrayal of trust in such cases.
