Full Description

Michael Lovelace, a 49-year-old man from Basingstoke, was sentenced to 33 years in prison following his conviction on 17 counts of serious sexual offences against two young victims. The offences, which spanned over a decade from 2012 to 2023, took place in Bordon and Southsea, areas in Hampshire, England.

The investigation began in March 2023 after the abuse was reported to the police. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary's Amberstone Investigations Team conducted a thorough probe, leading to Lovelace's arrest and subsequent trial at Winchester Crown Court. He was found guilty of a range of heinous acts, including five counts of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity without penetration, assault of a child under 13 by penetration, two counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13 by touching, two counts of an offender aged 18 or over causing a child under 13 to watch or look at an image of sexual activity, rape of a child under 13, and six counts of rape.

  • Causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity – no penetration (5 counts)
  • Assault of a child under 13 by penetration (1 count)
  • Sexual assault of a girl under 13 by touching (2 counts)
  • Causing a child under 13 to watch sexual activity (2 counts)
  • Rape of a child under 13 (1 count)
  • Rape (6 counts)

Sentencing occurred on 2 March 2024, where Judge [name not specified in article] imposed the 33-year custodial term, along with an extended licence period of eight years. Lovelace was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to remain on the sex offenders register for life. The case was prosecuted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, highlighting their commitment to tackling child sexual abuse.

Karen Slade, a police staff investigator with the Major Crime Team North and formerly of the Amberstone Team, commented on the outcome: 'I am very pleased with this result and to see Lovelace jailed for a considerable length of time for his abhorrent actions. Whilst no sentence will ever atone for the suffering that Lovelace has caused, I am glad that we have been able to bring some form of justice to the victims.' She further praised the victims' courage, noting their resilience enabled the successful prosecution. The case underscores the long-term impact of such crimes and the importance of reporting to authorities.
