Full Description

Giorgos Lagji, aged 38, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against a young girl in Newcastle. The abuse began when the victim was just eight years old and continued for over six years, involving multiple instances of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual activity with a child. Lagji, who had no fixed abode, was also charged with making indecent images of a child as part of the 28 offences he faced.

The case came to light in 2022 when the brave survivor reported the abuse to the police. Northumbria Police immediately launched an investigation, leading to Lagji's arrest. Despite denying the allegations, he was charged in December 2022. In May 2023, at Newcastle Crown Court, a jury convicted him on all 28 counts after seeing through his denials. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, with Judge [name not specified] imposing the 20-year custodial sentence. Lagji will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring.

During the trial, the survivor provided a poignant victim impact statement, highlighting the devastating effects of the abuse. She stated: “He made me feel helpless. I was only a child when the abuse began. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. I knew that the behaviour wasn’t ‘normal’, but this was all I knew. My childhood and innocence have been ripped from my hands and heart. I feel like I can never behave normally again. I have become good at masking how I am feeling as I have had to hide my emotions for so long and put on a front for other people. I put a smile on my face and tell people I’m fine, but inside I am broken. My childhood ended when my innocence was taken away from me and, for years, that’s all I have known.” This testimony underscored the profound trauma inflicted by Lagji's actions.

Detective Constable Lisa Herron of Northumbria Police, who led the investigation, praised the victim's courage post-sentencing. She described the case as one of the worst and longest spanning cases of abuse she had encountered in her career. Herron noted: “The victim in this case has shown such bravery in coming forward and speaking up against the person who systematically abused her for such a long time. I’d like to praise her courage and composure throughout this whole investigation and the criminal justice process; her commitment to justice has been unwavering. Now the whole world knows what Lagji is – a predatory monster. This sentence goes no way in erasing what the survivor has been through, but it means that Lagji will spend decades in prison and will be closely monitored for the rest of his life, which is what he deserves. I’m sure our communities will rest easier knowing he is behind bars – all thanks to this girl’s heroism.” The investigation was thorough, supported by evidence that led to Lagji's full conviction.

The offences occurred in Newcastle upon Tyne, with the abuse spanning from approximately 2016 to 2022. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of reporting child sexual abuse, as highlighted by the police's prompt action following the survivor's disclosure.
