Full Description

A 70-year-old man from Suffolk has been imprisoned for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old schoolgirl, in a case that has shocked the local community. John Elsley, residing on Halesworth Road in Linstead, Halesworth, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court where he was sentenced for his depraved actions against the young victim.

The offences occurred in October last year, when Elsley exploited the innocence of the child, leading to her being found clutching her teddy bear in the aftermath of the assault. The girl was unable to confide in an adult about the trauma she endured and instead documented the horrific events in writing, revealing the extent of Elsley's corruption of her childhood.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Martyn Levett addressed Elsley directly, stating: "You totally corrupted this little girl’s innocent childhood." The judge highlighted how Elsley had preyed upon the vulnerability of the child, committing assault by penetration and two separate sexual assaults on the same date. Suffolk Constabulary investigated the matter, leading to Elsley's arrest and subsequent guilty pleas to the charges.

In addition to his custodial sentence of four years and four months, Elsley was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for life. He was also issued with a restraining order prohibiting any contact with the victim or her family. The case was reported by the East Anglian Daily Press, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts to protect children from such predators in Suffolk.
