Full Description

Nathan Russell, a 32-year-old man from Scott Hall Road in Leeds, was convicted at Leeds Crown Court of controlling and coercive behaviour and sexual assault following a trial that exposed a prolonged campaign of domestic abuse against his partner.

The abuse, which West Yorkshire Police investigated after the victim confided in a family member and contacted officers, involved a range of violent and degrading acts. Russell physically assaulted his partner by hitting her with a metal paddle, forced her to eat food from the floor, spat at her, and restrained her by tying her to tables and chairs. These actions formed a catalogue of physical and mental torture that severely impacted the victim's life, stripping her of her confidence, social circle, and sense of security.

In her victim impact statement read to the court, the woman described the profound effects of the abuse: 'Before I met you, I had a large social circle, loved experiencing new things without a fear in the world. I was outspoken and confident in the person I was, and I genuinely believe these attributes are what led you to want to break me down and make me your victim of abuse.' She further addressed Russell directly, emphasising the gravity of his actions: 'You need to see the immense gravity of what your actions have caused because no woman on this earth should ever experience any type of abuse, let alone the level in which you were comfortable taking it too.' She also called for an end to violence against women, stating, 'Violence against women needs to stop, I believe it starts with women speaking out and holding up a mirror of justice to men like you.'

The jury found Russell guilty based on the evidence presented, highlighting the coercive nature of his control over the victim. Following the conviction, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Detective Constable Jessica Johnston from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit described Russell as a 'dangerous man' in a statement after the sentencing, praising the victim's bravery and resilience in coming forward.

This case, reported by the BBC on 25 November 2025, underscores the severe consequences of domestic abuse and the importance of victim testimonies in securing justice, with the trial taking place at Leeds Crown Court in West Yorkshire.
