A man from Flintshire has been imprisoned for sexually assaulting a woman by penetration, as reported by The Leader on 23rd October. Vincent Davies, aged 54 and of no fixed abode, appeared via video link from prison at Mold Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday morning. He had previously pleaded guilty to one count of assault by penetration, a serious sexual offence that left the victim suffering both physical pain and significant psychological impact.

The prosecution, led by Michael Whitty, detailed how the incident occurred in Flintshire. Following the assault, police were notified, and Davies promptly admitted to the offence during his interview. Whitty read from the victim's impact statement, highlighting the profound effects on her wellbeing: 'The offence had caused both physical pain and a psychological impact.'

In defence, Matthew Dunford argued that Davies' guilty plea, entered at an earlier hearing, was his strongest mitigation. Dunford emphasised Davies' admissions to police and his genuine remorse. 'He's never been before the courts before and ordinarily has been a hard-working, industrious, law-abiding man,' Dunford stated. He noted Davies' long career at a metal fabrication and building supply company. While not offered as an excuse, Dunford mentioned recent bereavements – the deaths of Davies' estranged wife and mother – which had affected his emotional state prior to the offence. 'It is my submission that those events undoubtedly had an impact on Mr Davies' emotional wellbeing,' he added.

Judge Rhys Rowlands acknowledged Davies' apologies and admissions but pointed out a 'degree of minimisation' in his discussions with the pre-sentence report author. 'The effect on the victim has been significant,' the judge remarked. Davies was sentenced to 42 months in custody, equivalent to three-and-a-half years, and made subject to a 10-year restraining order for the victim's protection. Additionally, he must comply with indefinite sex offender notification requirements and is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults.

The case was handled by North Wales Police, underscoring their role in investigating and bringing the matter to court. This sentencing reflects the judiciary's firm stance on sexual offences, ensuring public protection through imprisonment and ongoing restrictions.
