Offence Summary

Kelvin Brookes was jailed for possessing and distributing indecent images of child abuse, including Category A images described as the worst seen by the judge in 30 years.

Full Description

Kelvin Brookes, a 40-year-old family man, appeared at Southampton Crown Court where he was sentenced for possessing and distributing abhorrent indecent images of child sexual abuse. The case came to light after Brookes was found to have shared 84 Category A images with six online users and possessed over 150 moving images across Categories A, B, and C. One particularly horrifying image, described by the prosecutor as involving the torture of a young child, had been requested by 200 individuals, highlighting the severe nature of the material.

During the hearing, Edward Phillips, prosecuting, detailed how Brookes admitted to the charges of distributing and possessing the images. Judge Nicholas Rowland, who has sat in court for 30 years, expressed profound disgust, stating that the image was 'abhorrent and horrifying' and represented the worst he had encountered in his career. The judge emphasised the real-world impact, noting, 'It means that as we sit here children around the world are being abused for the gratification of people like you.' He further remarked, 'In all my 30 years of sitting in court, I have never heard of such a horrifying image. It amounts to the torture of a young child.'

In mitigation, defence counsel Mark Ashley argued that Brookes had downloaded the images but was unaware he had shared them. Ashley highlighted Brookes' personal circumstances, saying, 'He has lost his family, his job and his home. He was abused when he was younger and he was in a dark place when he viewed this material.' Despite this, Judge Rowland rejected the mitigation, pointing out, 'It’s said on your behalf you were in a dark place but no doubt this child was in an even darker one.' He concluded that 'a custodial sentence is exactly what a civilised society demands in this case.'

Brookes, who wept in the dock, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. The court proceedings underscore the ongoing fight against child sexual exploitation, with authorities continuing to target those who distribute such material online. This case was reported by the Daily Echo, with coverage by court reporter Clive Hammond.
