Full Description

Ian Watkins, the lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court in December 2013 to a total of 35 years in prison for a series of horrific child sex offences. Watkins pleaded guilty in November 2013 to 13 counts, including attempted rape of a baby, sexual assault of a child under 13, and possession of indecent images. The case shocked the nation due to the extreme depravity involved, with Watkins describing his actions as 'megalolz' even while in custody.

The judge, Mr Justice Royce, remarked that Watkins had 'plumbed new depths of depravity' and showed 'evident delight' in abusing children, displaying an 'almost complete lack of remorse'. He was branded a 'sexual predator' and 'dangerous', with the court emphasising the need to protect the public, particularly young females and children. Watkins received a 29-year custodial sentence plus a six-year extended licence period.

According to reports from Wales Online and Ministry of Justice statistics, this case highlighted the rising number of registered sex offenders in Wales, with over 4,700 recorded by March 2018. The offences involved multiple victims, including infants, and Watkins' celebrity status amplified the horror of his crimes.
