Offence Summary

Alexander Thomson subjected four women to a catalogue of horrific sexual and violent abuse over a seven-year period, leading to his conviction and sentencing.

Full Description

Alexander Thomson, a 42-year-old man, has been sentenced to an Order of Lifelong Restriction (OLR) following his conviction for subjecting four women to severe sexual and violent abuse. The offences, which spanned from 2012 to 2019, involved a pattern of domestic abuse that came to light through investigations by the Domestic Abuse Task Force.

The case began when Thomson first came to the attention of authorities in July 2019. Four women provided detailed accounts of the violence and sexual abuse they endured at his hands over the seven-year period. Despite the tragic deaths of two of the victims, aged 30 and 36, prior to the trial, their evidence was crucial. Their statements were read in court by an investigating officer, contributing significantly to Thomson's guilty verdict.

On 26 August 2022, at the High Court in Glasgow, Thomson was formally sentenced. He received an OLR, which imposes lifelong monitoring, along with a minimum custodial term of four years before parole eligibility. This means that even if released, he will remain under strict conditions for the rest of his life to protect the public.

Detective Chief Inspector Steven McMillan, who led the investigation for Police Scotland, described Thomson as 'a dangerous, serial abuser who presents a threat to women.' He highlighted the severity of the abuse, stating, 'He inflicted some of the most horrendous and shocking abuse I’ve ever come across.' McMillan also praised the bravery of the women involved, noting that their courage ensured accountability. The sentencing was seen as a measure to safeguard others from Thomson's actions.

Thomson was arrested on 12 December 2019 following the thorough investigation. The case underscores the persistent nature of domestic and sexual abuse, with Police Scotland emphasising their commitment to supporting victims and pursuing justice.
