Offence Summary

Mark Bridger was jailed for life with a whole life tariff for the murder of five-year-old April Jones, with the judge branding him a paedophile who harboured sexual fantasies about young girls and possessed child abuse images.

Full Description

Mark Bridger was sentenced at Mold Crown Court in May 2013 to life imprisonment with a whole life tariff, meaning he will die behind bars, for the abduction and murder of five-year-old April Jones in Machynlleth, Wales. A jury found him guilty of disposing of her remains after the horrific crime. The judge, Mr Justice Griffith Williams, described Bridger as a 'pathological liar' and a 'paedophile' who had long harboured 'sexual and morbid fantasies about young girls'.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Bridger's laptop contained images of pre-pubescent and pubescent girls, as well as 'foul pornography' depicting the gross sexual abuse of young children. This sexual element was integral to the case, underscoring Bridger's predatory nature. He became only the 32nd person in UK history to receive a whole life order for murder.

Wales Online reported on the shocking details, noting the case's impact on the community. The Ministry of Justice's figures on rising sex offenders in Wales provided broader context to such depraved crimes.
